Pickleball Court Dimensions and Layout Explained

Pickleball court layout diagram showing the baseline, sidelines, non-volley zone, service areas, and official court dimensions

Pickleball court dimensions at a glance

A regulation pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. That playing area stays the same for both singles and doubles, which makes the layout easier to learn for new players.

If you are setting up a casual home court or marking temporary lines, it also helps to think beyond the painted court itself. A larger playable area gives players more room to move safely and return deep shots.

What each line on the court means

The baselines run parallel to the net at the back of the court. The sidelines run the full length of the court. The centerline divides the service areas on each side, and the non-volley zone line marks the kitchen boundary 7 feet from the net.

Those markings create the left and right service areas, which are used for serving and score position, while the non-volley zone controls where players can and cannot volley near the net.

The kitchen explained

The non-volley zone, often called the kitchen, extends 7 feet back from the net on both sides. Players can stand in this area, but they cannot volley the ball while touching the kitchen or its boundary lines.

That one section changes how pickleball is played because it discourages players from crowding the net and smashing every ball out of the air.

Net and setup basics

The net should be 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches high in the center. According to USA Pickleball guidance, net posts are typically set 22 feet apart, and many builders recommend allowing space just outside the sidelines for the posts.

Helpful tip for outdoor courts

If you are building or laying out an outdoor court, a north-south orientation is commonly recommended. That helps reduce direct sun in players’ eyes during morning and late-afternoon play.
